Committee Assignments: The start of the term
*Note: For ease of access, I will usually include both a video update and the update in text form. The content will generally be identical.
Last night the new county board met officially for the first time in a brief meeting to receive committee assignments and introduce each other in committees. The committee assignments for this term are posted below. I will spare you the excitement of reading everyone’s name out loud (although that was part of the meeting, and it was as thrilling as it sounds).
I was assigned to the Legislative and Human Services committees. As the County Board is an arm of state government, the legislative committee is largely in charge of discussing and supporting state and federal legislation at the county level.
I am very excited about the Human Services committee, as Kenosha is rich with potential for growth in this area. I am looking forward to learning more about the many organizations that provide services for those who need them and how to work together and optimize efforts to care for our neighbors in need. There are the obvious gems of Kenosha County like Brookside who provide elderly care. I also recently went to the 50th Anniversary celebration of KHDS (Kenosha Human Development Services) and was in awe of all the work they’ve done over their time in operation. Personally, I am involved with a lot of disability rights advocates, as someone who grew up with a sibling with a significant disability and have watched my parents struggle to navigate the system my whole life. I am thrilled to be in a position to help families like mine and to meet the heroes of the community already engaged in this work.
As our fearless leader Monica Yuhas said last night, “Enjoy the next week and a half. The real work starts in May!” Looking forward to updating you all as we proceed.
